Frequently Asked Questions

There's no such thing as a stupid question.

Contact us if there's something else you have a query about

1

What kind of Martial Arts do you teach?

We practise Freestyle Kickboxing and self defence. All our instructors are black belts in this style and most bring other practices with them such as MMA, Boxing, Karate, Jitsu etc so quite a broad spectrum of styles are incorporated within each class.

2

Do I have to spar?

No, we never force anyone into doing anything that they are not confident with. We will teach you to sparr and develop your skills. Naturally Kickboxing is a contact sport but we operate a safe and controlled atmosphere where experienced instructors provide key skills and friendly tuition.

3

I’m really unfit how will I cope?

We expect all students to work at their own pace, if you need to take it a little slower and grab a drink that’s fine, alternatively if you want to push yourself that little bit harder. the option is available to you. Everyone has different levels of health and fitness and we understand that.

4

I’m worried about the class being all male

The classes are by no means male orientated, infact they are about 50/50

5

I’m worried that kickboxing sessions will be intimidating or aggressive

Everyone who attends our club would say that we are very welcoming and friendly. It is a family run business with many years of experience. All our instructors have been trained ‘in house’ and so are used to our methods of training and discipline. We do not want to scare anyone away and so are always available for any questions or help.

6

How will I know what to do on arrival and at my first session?

There will always be a senior student or instructor available to help any new students during the class and they will be able to answer any questions you may have. If you wish to participate in a free trial session, please arrive a little earlier than the class start time to enable us get you signed in and to show you around. In addition, if there is no one in reception, the door has a code entry system and the door buzzer may not be heard after the class has started.

7

What do I need to wear or bring to my first class?

Wear sensible sportswear i.e tracksuit bottoms/leggings and a t-shirt/vest. The main dojo (training hall) is fully matted so most students train bare footed. No need to bring anything else initially other than a bottle of water - we have a toilet and changing facilities.

8

What happens if I decide after my first free session that I’d like to join up?

Speak to reception or an instructor who will guide you through the process.

9

What are the costs?

We operate a very simple membership system. It’s £55 per month to train in as many classes per month as you choose.

There is also a £95 joining fee which includes your first month's membership and club trousers and a t-shirt.

10

How do I pay?

All payments are processed by our membership platform provider, TeamUp.
If you decide you would like to join after your free trial class, a one-off joining fee payment will need to be purchased (includes admin fee, first months membership and club t-shirt and trousers), along with a licence (your insurance and is also required to be able to grade or compete in competitions) - these are both paid by card through TeamUp, then the monthly membership is a Direct Debit, setup through TeamUp.

11

What is a license and why do I need one?

All students are required to have a license in place. A license is a record of your gradings and belts achieved and also incorporates your insurance cover.

All students enjoy the protection of insurance should an accident occur. I am sure you will agree with us that this is an unavoidable and necessary step to protect all our members and ourselves and falls inline with current legislation.

Licenses cost £30.00 per annum (pro rata) for all students.

12

Is there a minimum term or finance contract to sign like some gyms and clubs?

We ask that if you wish to leave FIMA Martial Arts, you provide us with 30 days' notice in writing (by email). Please note: We DO NOT operate a pay-as-you-go service or similar. We are a members' only club, however, we do not sign you up for a minimum term.

13

Can I do a ‘pay-as-you-go’ membership?

No, we do not offer pay-as-you-go membership or other discounted rates. We have tried this in the past and it has not worked out. All students pay £55 per month and enjoy the use of unlimited classes.
We do not sign you up for a minimum term contract nor do we operate our payment system through a finance company. You pay your fees by monthly Direct Debit - no middlemen, no finance houses!
We ask that if you wish to leave FIMA Martial Arts, you provide us with 30 days' notice in writing (by email).

14

Can I try it out before I commit?

Yes of course. We offer a free trial lesson

15

Is there parking?

Yes there is parking. Please be considerate especially adult members on a Wednesday when you need to avoid blocking in the parents who are attending for pick up of the juniors.

16

Can I come and watch my child?

There is a waiting area that parents are welcome to attend and free Wi-Fi. The waiting area does not give a good view of the gym area but, if you speak to the instructor first, there may be an opportunity to sit in the dojo and watch for a while.

17

When are gradings and how much do they cost?

We tend to grade twice a year.

Grading costs are based on which belt you take:
Red £10 | Yellow £15 | Blue £20 | Orange, Green, Purple, Brown £25 | Brown white stripe £35 | Brown black stripe £50 | Black £100

18

What is required to be able to grade?

We recommend being a member for at least 3 months and attending classes at least twice a week (if possible) to be able to go for a grading. You must be up to date with your membership payments, have a licence and, if you are going for Blue belt and above, you must have full sparring kit.

19

Are children (aged 15 or less) permitted to attend senior classes?

With some exceptions, more senior or more experienced juniors can attend the adult classes. Please speak to an instructor to decide on suitability.
